1. Любой разрыв в нормальной физической структуре или конфигурации деталей типа трещин, волосовин, включений или пористости. Нарушение сплошности может или не может влиять на работоспособность детали.
2. Прерывание типичной структуры сварного соединения из-за отсутствия однородности механических, металлургических или физических свойств материала или сварного соединения. Нарушение сплошности не обязательно дефект.

Нарушение однородности материала, вызывающее скачкообразное изменение его акустических характеристик - плотности, скорости звука, волнового сопротивления. Примеры несплошностей: трещины, шлаковые включения, непровары, раковины и т.п
Примечания:
1. К дефектам, не являющимся несплошностями, относятся, например, отклонения физико-механических свойств материалов от допустимых значений (например, пониженная прочность или твердость), изменение толщины
2. В приводимых далее определениях из известных стандартов используется термин «дефект», служащий корнем производных от него терминов «дефектоскопия» и «дефектоскоп». Однако основными типами дефектов являются именно несплошности, поэтому в дальнейшем будет использован термин «несплошность». При цитировании источников, в которых употребляется слово «дефект», после него в скобках будет приведен термин «несплошность»
